This is usually caused by an incorrect comm port setting. Refer to the "What Comm Port Do I Use" section to determine the correct comm port number. Also, it has been reported that some really super cheap USB to Serial Adapters simply do not work. If your USB to serial adapter is suspect, I would suggest trying a laptop with a dedicated RS232 Serial port.
